Kerch is one of the eldest cities in Russia and in the world. Kerch is situated in eastern part of the Crimean penincula. kerch was settled by Greek settlers 26 centuries ago and since then the life here has never stopped.

Former  names of the city: Greek settlers from Milet named their place Panticapaeum, what can be translated as “Fish Path”. Next centuries the city changed the name many times: Italians called it  Vosporo, Cerchio, Russians - Korchev, Turks - Charsha.

What to do in Kerch:

 
  • Climb to the top of Mithridates Mount. From a height of more than 90 meters there is a beautiful view on the central part of Kerch, Kerch Bay and a built bridge being built across the Kerch channel. On top of the mountain there is located the  Obelisk of Glory - the first monument in the country (built in 1944), a feat immortalized soldiers during the Great Patriotic War. On the slopes of Mount Mithridates there  are excavations of the ancient settlement Panticapaeum,the ancient capital of the powerful Bosporan Kingdom.

  • Visit the Museum of history of defense of Adzhimushkay quarry, a legendary underground citadel whicht in 1942 restrained incessant attacks of the enemy during 6 months. The Germans blew up the quarry, killed people with  gases suppressed attacks to the wells with water, but the Soviet soldiers could were not broken.

  • Visit  the Geroevskoe village, where the beaches have witnessed heroic landing of Eltigen  in 1943. In antique period there was located a thriving Greek port city of Nymphaeum, whose excavations are now in the process of museification.

  • Go on an unforgettable journey to the Kerch Fortress , this is a masterpiece of fortification of the XIX century. Walk through any of the five most interesting destinations of the "invisible fortress".

  • Find out why scientists from all around the world called Tsar Mound a unique monument of ancient funerary architecture. Visiting the mound, which was built in the IV century BC, gives you the opportunity to learn not only about the religious beliefs of the period of antiquity, but also about how, in the first centuries AD, Christianity spread in the Crimea,   early Christians used the mound for their meetings what can be seen from theirl paintings on the walls. The ancient mound builders used construction techniques, which were widely spread only many centuries after it, as they used diffrent interesting optical illusions, filled with philosophical meaning.

  • Take time to explore the archaeological collections in the oldest museum institution of Southern Russia (Historical and Archaeological Museum), learn the secrets of hoards in the Gold Room. Traces of different sides of the life of ancient bosporyan and work of archaeologists and restorers can be found in the Museum courtyard and Technological model Demeter’s crypt.

  • See one of the largest collections in the world lapidary. Lapidarium (stone Museum of Antiquities), the collection of which is represented by sculptures, tombstones and epigraphic monuments, architectural details, iconic objects from the Bronze Age to the XIX century. The main dominant in the culture of ancient peoples is Religion and mythology, they are are embodied in the images of the gods and of the ancient stone sculpture of the Bosporus, the Jewish, Christian and Muslim monuments.

  • Go on a master class on clay modeling, work on the potter's wheel and learn  painting on a pottery workshop "East-Crimean Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve". There are meticulously recreated the works of ancient masters, lessons are conducted by artists and restorers. Things created with your own can be taken home as a souvenir.

  • Visit the  the oldest Christian church of Russia, the Church of St. John

  • Plan a trip for spring and see how wild tulips and wild irises bloom in the vast steppes near Kerch.

  • Visit the hero-city of Kerch on May 8 and 9 to take part in the Victory Parade, Kerch is famous for the torchlight procession to Mount Mithridates and the traditional soldier halt with field kitchen and a very cosy atmosphere.

  • Plan a trip for  the first ten days of June, when the Kerch hosts the annual International Festival of Ancient Art "Bosporus Agony" and professional actors on the open-air stages make the performances based on the works of ancient authors.

  • Find unique antiques at the traditional flea market on Sundays in the central market or any day look at the fish section with the freshest fish actually, where there are a dozen species of it, with caviar and shrimps as well.

  • Visit the largest volcanic field of the Crimea, the valley near the  valley of mud volcanoes and mud lake near Bondarenkovo Chokrak.
