Щелкино

Shhelkino is a small town on the southern shore of the Azov Sea of the Kerch Peninsula, at the foot of Kazantip Point.  The city was founded in 1978 for the builders of the Crimean nuclear power plant and later named in honor of the Soviet nuclear physicist Kirill Shhelkin.

The city is popular as a seaside resort.  The Sea of Azov is not deep and quickly warms up, so families like to come here with children.  Beaches: fine sandy and long, although there are a number of cozy small coves near Shhelkino, where you can wonderfully relax and even settle with a tent.

From Simferopol (airport): 173 km

From Kerch (ferry): 79 km

What to do in Shhelkino:

1. Visit the city beach of Shhelkino which is connected by a single coastline to the beach of the village of Mysovoye along the Russkaya Bay.  The wide sandy coast stretches for 4 kilometers from the recreation center "Riga" to the pier of the village of Mysovoye, so even at the peak of the season there are plenty of places.  On the beach there are cafes, water entertainments, amusement park, there are canopies, sun beds and hammocks.

2. You should make a small trip to the beach "Tatarka", 3 kilometers from the city of Shhelkino if you have little space on the central beach.  This huge 25 kilometer shallow beach is undoubtedly one of the best beaches in the Crimea.  The depth is small to swim here, it is necessary to go deep into 50-100 meters.  Therefore, it is great for a family holiday with children.  The shell replaces the sand a few meters from the shore.  The water is clean and very warm.  Due to its length, the beach is never "packed" by holidaymakers.  Most of the coast is generally deserted.  It is an ideal place for a wild holiday.  From Shhelkino you can get here on foot through the steppe, it takes half an hour, or by taxi.

3. It is imperative to take a walk along the central beach to the rotunda - this is a romantic observation deck on the Cape Turtle, not far from the boarding house "Riga".  The arbor was built in 1972 at the suggestion of the director of the boarding house E. Vilka as a gift to the beloved city. Unfortunately, the rotunda was unprotected by anything before the sea element and turned out to be short-lived. It had to be restored after almost complete destruction.  Now the restored one is much stronger, although not so elegant. A complete copy of the previous one was erected in front of it as compensation.

4. Visit the Kazantip Nature Reserve - one of the most ecologically clean zones in the Crimea with pristine nature, unique landscape, rich flora and fauna.  Almost the entire cape is covered with steppes, which are cut off to the sea by limestone rocks.  The southern part of Kazantip is called the Archaeological Coast.  Historians assume that it was an ancient hillfort of Heraclius.  There are traces of agricultural lands and artificial terraces of ancient times, stone walls and earthen ramparts.  The nature reserves of Crimea are open for visiting; however the walk is informative with the guide.

5. Master extreme sports in the Water Sports Center in the Eastern Crimea "Yokhokho" on the coast of the "Tatarka" bay.  Shhelkino and the nearby village of Mysovoe are located between the two gulfs of Arabatsky and Kazantip, which creates ideal wind conditions for wind and kitesurfing.  The season begins on the 1st of May and lasts until the 1st of October and longer.  The center is engaged in kiting, windsurfing, surfing, SAP boarding, kayaking, paragliding.  This list will expand in the near future. A new sports hall is founding for those who are fond of boxing, cross fit, yoga.

6. Visit the unfinished Crimean nuclear power plant located near the city of Shhelkino on the shore of the salt Aktash Lake.  Once, Soviet scientists conceived the idea of turning Shhelkino into one of the centers of the Union's nuclear industry.  They did not succeed in this - the construction of the almost finished Crimean nuclear power plant was stopped after the Chernobyl disaster.  The station was dismantled.  However, the building remained and later was successfully used by the organizers of the music festival "Kazantip" to hold youth discos.  Films were made on the ruins of the nuclear power plant and the most famous is "Inhabited Island" by Fyodor Bondarchuk.  Excursions lead from the city to the building of the nuclear power station but you can visit it yourself.  Nuclear fuel was not imported here so there is no radiation hazard.

7. Do yoga on the shore of the gentle Azov Sea in the Crimean Institute of Physical Culture on the basis of practical yoga.  There are seminars and practical classes annually in the summer on the beach.

8. Visit master classes if you rest with children on gingerbread toys, ceramics, and colored sand and not only in the art studio "Arlekino" in the city center.  Kids wait here for developing and intellectual games, karaoke, dancing, cartoons and interesting acquaintances.  There is an anti-coffee "Arlekino" at the art studio if they get hungry.

Editorial recommends:

1. Visit the Kazantip Cape on April and early May when tulips and irises bloom.

2. Take a horse walk to the building of the nuclear power plant.  This walk will take 3 hours.  You can order this excursion in Shhelkino from any tour organizer or directly on the farm in the village of Mysovoye, on the coast of the Tatar bay.

3. Ride the sights of Shhelkino and the outskirts on a red cabriolet with Vasily Afanasyevich, a famous Crimean guide.  You can find it on the waterfront of the city.

4. Pay attention to the festival life of the town.  Be sure to visit the festival if you plan a vacation in Shhelkino at the end of June. The "Fortune" is a multi-genre arts festival.  Every year it collects talents from all over the Crimea: who sing, dance, play various musical instruments, draw, shoot short films, and practice applied art or photography.  In August, the Shhelkino holiday is diversified by the annual festival of contemporary art "Sol".  Guests are welcomed by creative meetings, music programs, experimental performances, master classes, street-shows.

5. While relaxing in Shhelkino, do not miss the opportunity to visit the largest volcanic field of Crimea - the valley of mud volcanoes near the village of Bondarenkovo, seven kilometers from Kerch. It is often called the "Lunar Valley" because of the similarity of the landscape with the craters on the Moon.  Numerous griffins climb a meter and a half above the ground and constantly gurgle.  Salsa, small dirt lakes, spews dirt and gas to the surface of the earth from a depth of several hundred meters to several kilometers.

6. You should make an unforgettable excursion to the famous General beaches if you are a true connoisseur of peace and solitude.  "General beaches" or "Coast 1000 bays" is the Karalarskiy landscape park in the north of the Kerch peninsula, picturesque bays with the purest sandy beaches.  You can get there by your own or hired transport in the direction of the Kurortnoye village through Ostanino, Novotradnoye and Zolotoe. You can also go through the village of Ostanino, Leninsky and turn Gornostaevka to the left and through the Bagerovo village, go to the coast "Generalskiye beaches". This route is slightly longer than the first, but the road surface is better here. The third option is through the city of Kerch in the direction of the village Kurortnoye. There are some minuses: lack of infrastructure and fresh water.

7. You should visit the Leninsky district museum of local lore in the village of Lenino, 20 km from Shhelkino if you do not mind getting acquainted with the history of the Kerch Peninsula.  After all, the Kerch Peninsula was inhabited by people, beginning with the Stone Age, in ancient times, in the middle Ages.  There is a museum in the center of the village in the building of the Palace of Culture on Pushkin Street.

8. Visit the unique nursery of ornamental birds in the Ilichevo village near Shhelkino. An interesting man ornithologist Pavel Vedmid lives there who collected a rare and unique collection of birds and animals in the farmhouse.  Here live pigeons of different breeds, eagles, pheasants, peacocks, guinea fowls, parrots, swans and many breeds of decorative chickens. Animals are rabbits, raccoon, marten, and Vietnamese pigs.  All animals are tame and sociable.  A small zoo is located on Prodolnaya st., 81. And even if you do not remember the address any passer-by will tell you.
