In Yalta, among garden’s greenery, stands a house, in which A.P. Chehov spent the last years of his life. Chehov took up Yalta as his residence in autumn 1898. Within 10 months he constructed a house and a wing, which make up integrated architectural complex. The author of the project is L.N. Shapovalov. The writer had been living in that house since September 1899 till the first of May 1904. Thanks to heiress’s endeavors, his sister Maria Pavlovna Chehova (1863 -1957), the house and the garden became a public museum. She managed to preserve the outlook of the house, letters, manuscripts, documents, personal belongings untouched, so the existence of the writer is felt there.

There were many people while visiting Chehov, at different periods of time: L. Andreev, I. Bunin, K. Balmont, M. Gorkij, V. Korolenko, A. Kuprin, D. Mamin-Sibirjak, Vasnecov, I. Levitan, K. Korovin,  S. Rahmaninov, F. Shaljapin, V. Panina, P. Orlenev, V. Komissarzhevskaja, A. Nazimova, P. Svobodin. In  April 1900 Moscow Arts Theatre’s troupe was there, headed by K.S. Stanislavski and V.I. Nemirovich-Danchenko. The theater had been on Yalta tour with Chehov’s «Chajka» («The seagull») and «Djadja Vanja» («Uncle Vanya»). There are artifacts which remind of that event – palm’s branch and scarlet ribbon, with the sign «To A.P. Chehov, the deep interpreter of Russian reality. Yalta, the 23 of April 1900»). In the writer’s study one can see an ancient carved casket, the gift from MHAT artists, devoted to the writer’s 25-years literary career and his birthday on the 17 of January 1904. There are also photos of actors and stage directors with presentation inscriptions to A.P. Chehov.

Yalta’s period in Chehov’s creative work is marked with such masterpieces as: «Dama s sobachkoj» («The Lady with the Dog»), «Arhierej» («Bishop»), «Na svjatkah» («During Christmastide»), «Nevesta» («A bride»), «V ovrage» («In a ravine »), «Tri sestry» («Three Sisters ») and «Vishnevyj sad» («The Cherry Orchard »).

There are still lots of plants preserved in the garden, which were planted by Chehov himself. During winter time there is wonderful smell of perfoliate honeysuckle, loquat and cornel. «The permanent spring»  – that is the essence of Chehov’s orchard.

There is a new building next to the Chehov’s house, it was built in 1964. There is represented the whole literary display, informing about the course of personal and creative life. There is shown a film about writer’s life at the beginning of the excursion. After that the excursionists get acquainted with the memorial garden and the house.
