Many associate a trip to the southern coast of Crimea with the classic summer vacation at sea.

But the warm sea, beaches and entertainment infrastructure are only the "tip of the iceberg" of amazing opportunities of this region.

Even in the middle of the XIX century, the outstanding Russian physician Sergei Petrovich Botkin, who laid the foundations of climate-therapy on the South Coast, noted its great similarity with the climate of resorts of Italy and France, where at that time have been effectively treated tuberculosis patients.

In this article I want to share with you how and why a simple walk in the fresh air can be a real.

Why is it helpful to breathe Crimean air?

It's no secret that the sea air is good for our health. There is practically no dust or microbes, it is saturated with ions of sea salts (potassium, calcium bromide, magnesium, iodine, etc.), as required for metabolic processes in our body, rich in oxygen and ozone.

Great importance in the formation of the unique healing properties of the South Coast air also has its rich vegetation. On the southern slope of the Crimean mountains, you can find more than one thousand different plants that saturates the air with healing essential oils. But a special recreational value have pine forests and juniper groves. Emitted by them volatile production have unique power. They inhibit the activity of many micro-organisms, have a pronounced anti-inflammatory and soothing effect.

A very important factor, increasing the recreational value South Coast resorts several times, is extremely "favorable geography" of the region.

Big Yalta comfortably located in a spacious natural amphitheater. Main ridge of Crimean mountains by high walls protects it from the cold north wind. Due to this isolation, on a small plot of land, 283 square km (Crimea area is 27 000 sq. km), reigns really unique to our latitude climate – dry subtropical of Mediterranean type.

Why is it so important? Excessive dampness worsens the healing properties of air. In summer, it enhances the feeling of heat, in the winter – the feeling cold, creating discomfort. Also, due to the high level of humidity in the summer it becomes stuffy. Stuffiness is not tolerated by small children and the elderly people, and those, suffering from diseases of heart and respiratory system, especially asthmatics, sultry climate is generally contraindicated for them.

Thanks to the dry subtropical climate on the South Coast winters are mild and short, summer is dry and hot, not stuffy. The humidity level is close to the ideal for the human body (50%) – in July it is 58% (V.V. Ezhov, a popular science publication "To the Crimea for health", publishing house "Azgol-press", 2013).

Crimean South Coast’s air, filtered by Crimean forest and sea breezes is a unique natural inhalation, which has no analogues not only in Russia, but throughout the former Soviet Union! And among the European resorts, as claimed by the famous S.P. Botkin, only such resorts as the Azure coast of France and the Italian Riviera can stand with it in one line.

For whom the  air of Crimea is helpful?

South Coast’ Air, penetrating into our body, has the strongest integrated beneficial effect, it increases our defenses – the immune system, speeds up metabolism, improves heart and respiratory organs, increases the level of hemoglobin in blood, improves the mood, gives good night's sleep.

Due to its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, acting directly on the mucous membranes of the respiratory system and penetrating deep into the lungs, the Crimean air inhibits the activity of many pathogens. Therefore, it is extremely useful for people suffering from respiratory diseases: bronchitis, including chronic asthma, pneumonia, etc., because these diseases are mostly triggered by microbial or allergic reaction to them.

Due to the same property of air, even in the second half of the XIX century in the Crimea, on the southern coast, were begun organized the first TB sanatorium. And now, as medicine has developed a number of antibiotics and chemotherapeutics, Crimean air remains the most reliable and effective means of prevention of tuberculosis, because strong immune system is the most unfavorable conditions for the life of any pathogen, including TB bacillus.

What time of the year in the Crimea, is the most useful for our health?

Despite the great popularity of the South Coast during summertime, resort-doctors claim that the most useful time of the year in the Crimea is autumn. And this is a strong justification.

Scientific-Research Institute named after I.M. Sechenov proved, that during cool period the air healing properties of South Crimean Cost are increased by 30%! Primarily, this is due to the fact that in the cool air increases partial oxygen content, and are created the necessary conditions for tempering – short air baths.

In addition, it should be remembered, that in fall we are less prone to overheating, which can be dangerous for people suffering from cardiovascular diseases, and in principle is unfavorable for people with any diseases.

Interesting facts about the "health path"

One way of getting a full range of air healing effects on the body is a "health path" - a walk along the Crimean parks and mountain trails. It is understandable why the first Russian health trails were built exactly in the Crimea. In 1900-1901 in the Crimean Livadia, by the recommendation of S.P. Botkin was built a horizontal path with length of 6580 m at a height of 140 m above sea level, which is called "Royal Path" (now – "Sun Trail").

It runs through an ancient relic park planted with rare medicinal plants, passes Cross rock with the ruins of medieval buildings, rocks Ai-Nicolas, Belogolovaja and Pirozhok, delighting the eye with spectacular views. Walking this route will not cause you any stress – the track of the trail is almost horizontal, with no steep descents and climbs. Walk through it is useful for everybody, even for people suffering from disorders of the circulatory system.

A little later, in the years 1901-1902, in memory of the famous doctor, was built another Crimean trail – "Botkin". It is very different from the "Tsar" one. Like wild, it winds through the mountain forest among healing Crimean pines and rises high on a rock Stavri-Kaya (760 m above sea level), which offers a unique panorama of Yalta and its suburbs.

Those who wants to walk this path, will see ups and downs, tall pines, slender spikes piercing sky, cascades of mountain streams, stone cornice and balustrade of the "Devil's Bridge" over the cliff, spectacular views of the sea, hills and rocks! "Botkin trail" is the most beautiful route in Yalta!

Today, in the area of Big Yalta developed more than 40 routes for "healing paths", the most famous of which are the mystical "Pushkinskaya path" or "Road to anywhere", "Kalendskaya trail", picturesque "Taraktashskaya trail" designed and created by the renowned doctor Vladimir Nikolaevich Dmitriev. There are trails to overcome which, you need a whole day, and there are those that can be completed in 1.5-2 hours, passing some of them requires serious physical training, but most of them are quite available for any tourist. In other words, it is possible to select the rout to any taste and direction.

Walking on medical Crimean trails is much more useful than the usual inhalation sessions, because during exercises, even if it is small, improves the function of the respiratory system – enhanced frequency and depth of breathing, increases the amount absorbed air. Besides develops stamina, trains the heart speeds, increases metabolism. For example, overcoming the distance of 3 km, even in unhurried pace – at a rate of 60 steps per minute, the metabolism is increased for one a half times.

To get a full therapeutic effect, experts recommend to make such trips lasting at least 3-4 hours and do not overload your body. The best criterion for choosing the load is your free, regular breathing.

20 days in the Crimea is enough for your body to become saturated with useful microelements. During this time, the immune system strengthens by increasing the of metabolic processes. There you will get rid of toxins, many diseases will disappear, and you will certainly not catch new ones throughout the year.

I hope this information will help you to qualitatively diversify favorite seaside recreation and get a new positive experience, especially related to your health and well-being!

For assistance in preparing this article, I want to express my gratitude to Professor Yezhov Vladimir Vladimirovich, doctor of medical sciences, head of the department of physical therapy, medical climatology and resort factors Scientific-Research Institute named after Sechenov. Thank you from my heart for your patience and generosity with which you share your knowledge and experience!
